50th Anniversary of the Arts Therapies

at University of Hertfordshire

This academic year 2021-22 marks the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Art Therapy and the arts therapies teaching, training, professional development, and research at the University of Hertfordshire.

50 years ago, the first specialist art therapy certificate course in the UK was launched by John Evans and Edward Adamson at the St Albans School of Art, later Hertfordshire College of Art and Design. This became the first Postgraduate Diploma in art therapy which was validated by the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA) in 1975.

In the 1980’s the introduction of drama therapy and dance movement therapy Postgraduate Diploma programmes at St Albans ushered in a twenty-year period of mixed discipline teaching across the three different arts therapies specialisms.
